If anyone was going to break Michael Collins’s Squad in 1921 it was the infamous Identification Company, better known as the Igoe Gang. This was a team of ruthless RIC detectives under the command of Head Constable Eugene Igoe from Mayo. It was their mission to patrol the streets of Dublin searching for IRA men on the run who had come to the city. Ultan Courtney reflects on this serious threat to the IRA in his new book.
